DRR Visit

On the 3^rd of March 2011, the Rotaract Club of Loyola College had its official DRR Visit Ceremony at the Lawrence Sundaram Auditorium, Loyola College. This was the first DRR Visit for the year 2010 – 2011 in the R. I. Dist. 3230. The Guest of Honour for the day was our beloved principal, Rev. Dr. B. Jeyaraj S.J, who felicitated the club on its achievements. A short 20 minute video was also screened to the audience as a quick recap of all our projects over the past 9 months.

Also present on this joyous occasion were our parent club president, Rtn. Gunasekhar S., our New Generations Chairman, Rtn. Prasanna Shenoy and other members from our parent club like Rtn. Christopher and Rtn. IPP. George B. Cherian. Rotaractors from the various other clubs in the district were also present. The DRR, Rtr. PP. Suresh Manoharan stressed on the need for other clubs to take the cue from us and organise more projects aimed at a wider audience base. The rotaractors from Loyola College, who had been vital in the club’s success over the past 9 months, were honoured at the event. The event ended with the rendering of the National Anthem.

The Rotaract Club of Loyola College organised a professional service project christened “LUSTRE” replicating the District Award Winning project ‘MELIORA’ on 24 January 2011 at Sri Sankara Vidyashram School in Thiruvanmyur. It was attended by more than 100 Interactors from different schools. The function started at 10 am and the chief guest our DRR Rtr. Suresh Manoharan who gave his views on why one should be a part of a voluntary movement like Rotaract. The orientation session was then handled by two students from Loyola College, Rtr. Samuel Augustine and Rtr. Abdul Ahad.

After the presentation, Rtr. Tarun Murugesh came and demonstrated some simple life saving techniques. A sudden blossom to the event was the presence of Rtr. Britto Manohar, immediate past Secretary, Rotaract Club of Loyola College, who came and shared his experience in Rotaract. Then Rtn. Mohsin Bijapuri came and added a great flavour to the event. He had a good interaction with the Interactors and they had questionnaire section with him.

In the valedictory, the chief guest DRR Rtr. Suresh and Rtn. Mohsin Bijapuri and the school management were honoured. And with spirits sky high, the event got over at about 1.15pm.

A talk show with Kings & Queens of their fields

Rtr. M.A.M.Yasin Bijapuri, Rtr. V.Vivek Kumar Dadhich and Rtr.Sachin Bardia represented the Rotaract Club of Loyola College for a talk show organized by NDTV 24x7. Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, Karthik Chidambaram(member of AICC and son of Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram ), Khusboo Sundar(Actress and member of DMK ) were the panelists for the show which was aimed to discuss on the “Indian of the Year” in the field of sports and politics.

The venue of the talk show was in M.C.C.Hr.Sec.School. Students from Loyola College, M.C.C. , Stella Maris College, IIPM and a decent number of others formed the elite audience. Being true loyolites, we reached the venue by 7:10 pm only to find that the show will start in a ‘while’. After passing a considerable amount of time chatting, we were invited for refreshments. While nibbling my sandwich, I noticed a fair man who looked strikingly familiar. Then did I realize that the man was Vishy Anand himself ! Sitting beside him was actress Khusboo. I tried to be placid but couldn’t. I told Rtr. Sachin and some of my friends about this.

By 8:30 pm we sat over the benches. The show co-coordinator was quite adroit in making the audience look like a mixed ratio and he did the same with us. The show started by 8:45 pm and we were already in rapt attention.

Sensible questions were thrown open to the panel. There was one question on who should get an award of “Politician of the Year” and the expected happened. Karthik Chidambaram named Rahul Gandhi whereas Khusboo named . The best part was that they both validated their nominations too! In his talk, both Vishwanathan Anand and Karthik Chidambaram emphasized on the obsession of Cricket. Karthik even commented, “There is a lot more to sports beyond Cricket.”

A few questions on politics and corruption were asked by the viewers. One question was targeted to Vishy Anand’s plans to enter politics! He said, ‘Well.. um.. I’m focusing more on my game right now.. As for now.. There are no such plans.”

The show ended on a happy note immediately after which the viewers thronged for autographs and Kodak moments with the panelists. Karthik Chidambaram left soon while Vishy and Khusboo stayed for a while. We tried getting snaps with them. I managed to get an autograph from Vishy and Khusboo.

Overall, the show was quite enthralling and I can’t wait to see myself on T.V.!

A team of 13 members comprising a Rotarian and 12 Interactors came to Chennai from Kandy, Sri Lanka. Rtrs. Sachin and Abhishek spent a full day ( 18^th Dec ) with them showing them around parts of Chennai and also shopped at Express Avenue – the new buzzplace of youth in Chennai. On Monday the 20^th, Rtrs. Fortunatus and Prasad accompanied them on a tour of the preferred locations in Chennai like the beach, fort and Semmozhi Poonga.

They also went shopping at Saravana Stores in T.Nagar and described it as an extremely interesting experience. Their stay concluded with a grand farewell lunch at the Taj Connemara, Mount Road on the 21^st December. Rtrs. Sachin, Deepak, Fortunatus and Prasad attended the event which was part of the Rotary Club of Madras ( our parent club’s ) weekly meet. We also exchanged Flags and LRC Books with them and presented each Interactor with a souvenir and an Indian Flag miniature.

On the 10^th and 11^th of December 2010, the annual Inter – Collegiate Departmental Festivals were held at Loyola College. The Rotaract Club of Loyola College set up a full time help desk with volunteers to guide the visitors to the various departments. This was the first time in the history of the college that such a help desk was set up. The move was greatly commended by one and all. The club also helped in effectively maintaining the overall discipline inside the campus on that busy day.

We see the Sea

Rtr. Vivek, Rtr. Lokesh and Rtr. Mervyn (Club’s P.R.O.) represented the Rotaract Club of Loyola College for a field visit organized by its parent club, Rotary Club of Madras. The visit was to the 129 yr. old Chennai Port Trust Headquarters, as part of the project headed by Rtn. Vivek Harinarayanan, Director - Vocational Services, Rotary Club of Madras.

We assembled the Taj Connemara Hotel from where we ventured out for a visit to Chennai Port Trust. We reached the destination at 1:00pm wherein we were guided to the conference hall. Everybody sat and whence we introduced ourselves to the rest.

After the introductions were done, 2 officials from Chennai Port Trust guided us through a presentation which highlighted the history of Chennai Port Trust. The presentation also spoke about Chennai as the Hub-port and about the economics of Chennai Port Trust.

Chennai Port Trust handles import, export and other sea-oriented affairs for states like Karnaka, Kerala, A.P. and parts of Maharashtra. Chennai is also called a hub-port because many imports-exports are done by various ports via Chennai Port Trust. In 2009-2010, Chennai Port Trust handled 61.6million tones of cargo. Chennai Port Trust deals with export of iron-ore, coal, etc. and is focused on cargo and containers handling too.

At present, Chennai Port Trust handles 28% of import and 36% export of the country. Of the 13 major ports scattered throughout India, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Chennai Port Trust hold prominence. In the last 5 years, US invested $100mn on Chennai Port Trust. There are 4 C’s in Chennai Port Trust namely Car, Cargo, Container and Cruise. One of the appraising facts is that the Jawahar Dock is the deepest Dock in

India

After the presentation met its end, we were flabbergasted when Rtn. Vivek informed us quite enthusiastically that we will be literally venturing in the sea. He said, “The weather is rough, but not rough enough for the sea-venture to be cancelled”. So, in about 10 minutes in car, we reached the terminus of Dr. Ambedkar Dock where a ship was waiting for us. We all walked in and the ship left the terminus. When I saw a container ship, I realized what “I am speechless” means..! I could do nothing but watch the cargo fleets and cranes of behemoth sizes. We were served refreshments. We went up to the Jawahar Dock and came back to the point where we started. The weather was too rough for a sojourn in the open ocean. From Jawahar Dock, The Chief Secretariat was lucidly seen. I saw the horizon and I felt as if the ocean had her hands wide-spread, ready to embrace me..!

We came back and we had some more refreshments. From there we recalled our path to the Chennai Port Trust H.Q. and whence the fleet of Rotarians and Rotaractors left to the vantage point, Taj Connemara Hotel.

The visit was enthralling..! And there are no words to describe the size of the ships..!

Adengappa - Part 1 !

On the 21^st of November , we did a joint club service project with the Rotaract Club of Loyola Community. The venue was Queensland and we had a great time at the amusement park enjoying all the rides and having good fun. The project “Adengappa” definitely made us feel like the name suggests at the end of the day.

On 28^th Nov, we celebrated the Birthday of Rtr. Raja , our Joint Secretary at DuBowl Centre. It was a great surprise to the man who didn't expect us to hold his birthday celebrations at an District event. We hope it was a memorable day for him and wish him luck in all his future endeavours.

First Zone Meeting

On the 27^th of November, the first Zone Meeting for Zone 2 was held at the Rotaract Club of Loyola College premises. Rotaractors from the various other clubs in Zone 2 like RC Viswahita, RC Zenith and RC SDNBVC attended the meet. This incidentally was the first Zone meeting to be held in R.I.Dist. 3230 this year. Rtr. ZRR Solomon Rajesh, was also present. RC Loyola College is indeed honored to be the first hosts of this grand union.

Mind Crushing Day....

On the 13^th of November, we in partnership with our brother club the Rotaract Club of Madras, helped organize the event “Mind Crushers 2010” which was organized by the Madras Midtown Round Table 42 at the Lady Andal School premises. We helped first with the registrations and later also helped out backstage. More than 10 members from our club were part of this venture. Also, our Club team, comprising Rtrs. Yasin, Deepak and Karan took part in the quiz and narrowly missed out on being crowned the “Best College Team”.

The Rotaract Club of Loyola College, jointly with the Rotaract Club of Loyola Community, hosted RYLA - Aurum '10 in September. And , people have been so enthused by it that they have even started a Fan Page on Facebook for that. All that we can say to you fans is a big "Thank You". And Hope you all had fun.

Campus Cleaning !!

On the 27^th of September 2010, all the clubs at Loyola College organized a Campus Cleaning Drive. The Rotaract Club of Loyola College, one of the fore runners in the college when it comes to Enviro-friendliness, pledged its complete support and designated 50 volunteers for this event, the most among all clubs at Loyola. We are indeed proud to be part of this mammoth initiative. The clean up drive was part of the Green Fest organized by the College Management on 27^th and 28^th of September. Various competitions were held and lectures given and the students were oriented on the importance of been eco-friendly.

Ovations '10

Ovations ’10, Loyola’s fabulous Inter-Departmental Cultural Festival were held on the 17^th and 18^th of September, 2010 at the football ground, Loyola College. The preliminary stages were held between the 2^nd and 14^th of September and it all culminated in the grand finale on the 17^th and 18^th. The guest list was a star-studded one and included the likes of actors Vivek, Srikanth, Karunas and singers Vijay Yesudas, Tanvi Shah and many more.

Our board members and green Rotaractors took active part in the various events (about 50+ events) and won many laurels.

Ø Rtr. Gaurav Gupta, Director – Community Service, was the Deputy Event Coordinator for the show.

Ø Rtr. Mohd. Karan Ubaidi, Director – Club Service, was the Associate Head of the Creatives Team for Ovations ’10 and designed the Logo for this year’s fest. He was also one of the official photographers.

Ø Rtr. Sachin, Director – International Service, was the Master of Ceremony for a few events.

Ø Rtr. Chetan Chhabriya, Associate Director – Community Service, was part of the committee for Discipline at Ovations ’10.

Ø Rtr. Deepak B, Editor In Chief, was one of the photographers at the event.

And finally, we’d like to heartily congratulate and appreciate the efforts put in by the Students Union Team led by Mohd. Rashan Sultan, President, and guided by Prof. I.A.J. Jeyadoss, Dean of Students for making Ovations ’10 a Swashbuckling success.

Aurum ’10 - Discovering the GOLD in You!

“An Idea can change your life” says Abhishek Bachchan on TV. But, in this case, it was Aircel that changed our lives. Yeah, one phone call from Rtr. Pres. Yasin to Rtr. IPP Praveen was the first baby step with regard to District Rotaract RYLA ’10. Both the clubs, closely associated by more than just the name of Loyola, were quite eager to venture out jointly and what better stage to do it than the District Rotaract RYLA ’10?!?!

Thus, the Rotaract Club of Loyola College, in its 26^th year of inception (means starting here – not to be confused with the recent Blockbuster) and the Rotaract Club of Loyola Community, in its charter year, applied to the District Rotaract Council headed by Rtr. DRR Suresh Manoharan to be the co-hosts for District Rotaract RYLA ’10. The District accepted their nomination on 11^th August (incidentally the birthday of Rtr. Pres. Aditya Mohan) and the rest as they say, was HISTORY!

From that day, work began at a frantic pace. The office bearers for RYLA were elected and other formalities like sponsors and so on done with. Also, the search for the ideal venue began. After spending nearly a week hopping from one possible site to another from one at Pulicat Lake near the Andhra Border till Dakshin Chitra on the ECR, 2 spots were shortlisted – Dakshin Chitra and CReNIEO Training Centre. CReNIEO was later finalized as the venue for District Rotaract RYLA ’10 as Dakshin Chitra had been the spot last time round for District Rotaract RYLA ’09 MAD.

There were meetings almost every day and new decisions were being taken. The design team comprising Rtrs. Prabhoo, Ramakrishna, Karan and Zoheb created the Logo and other designs like Banners, Danglers, Posters, Certificates and so on, all of which were approved after scrutiny. The District Rotaract RYLA ’10 was Christened Aurum ’10 with the tagline “Discover the GOLD in You”.

Major aspects like the speakers to handle the sessions for the Rylarians were selected and also minor issues like splitting up of participants into teams and so on were also discussed and finalized. The official banner release took place amidst much fanfare at the District Rotaract Assembly AWESOME ’10. We began to speed up the processes as we had less than a month’s time in hand. The only thing that was running in the minds of all us organizers was the successful completion of District Rotaract RYLA – Aurum ’10.

Meetings increased in frequency and discussions sometimes turned heated up and flamboyant, each one giving his/her inputs in making Aurum ’10 the most bestest RYLA ever organized ! (Yup! that was a rip off from Shakespeare). In the meantime, Registrations had begun and the response was overwhelming. Numbers were coming in day by day and we finally had to CLOSE registrations as there was no more place available for accommodation at the Venue.

The D-Day finally arrived. We, the organizers reached the venue as early as 9 am and began to decorate what would be our dwelling place for the next three days. The 150 odd participants on the other hand gathered at the Take off point – Air India Building near Ethiraj College from where they were transported to the venue by MTC Buses. They reached CReNIEO at around 12.30pm and were warmly greeted with a welcome drink. The Rylarians settled down in their dormitories/rooms quickly and came down for lunch by about 1.15pm.

The Inauguration function took place at around 2.30pm. The Chief Guest was District Governor Nominee Rtn. Raja Seenivasan and the Guest of Honor was Rtn. Praveen .K. Mehra. Other Rotarians like Rtn. Prasanna Shenoy, Rtn. Sayeeram, Rtn. Shriram, Rtn. Kasturi Raj, Rtn. Dhanasekar, Rtn. Narayana Moorthy, Rtn. Ganesh, Rtn. Bhakthavachalam, and Rtn. Murali Venkatesh also graced the occasion.

The DRR and the host club presidents were collared by their respective Sergeant-At-Arms. The DRR then welcomed the gathering. This was followed by the briefing about District Rotaract RYLA – Aurum ’10 by Rtr. Arjun, Rtr. Yasin and Rtr. Aditya Mohan. Rtn. Sayeeram and Rtn. Prasanna Shenoy gave their felicitations. Rtn. Praveen .K. Mehra, in his speech stressed on the importance of the Rylarians making full use of this program to discover and bring out their inborn talents. Rtn. Raja Seenivasan briefed the audience on the importance of being up to date and also urged them to learn additional languages as it will help them in the long run. The inauguration concluded by around 4.00pm.

The participants adjourned for about 15 minutes for high tea and were soon back in business. Mr. Babu Seshadri then took over the floor and started the ice breaker session where they were introduced to one another and also split up into 4 different teams of about 40 members each. Team Leaders were also elected and directions were given to them regarding the decorum and rules to be followed.

This was followed by the first serious session of the day – theTeam Building session handled by Rtn. Kannan. There were exercises on innovative thinking and others on team building. His session was enjoyed by one and all. The participants were briefed about the schedule for the next day and were also informed about the cultural activities scheduled to take place the next day. The Rylarians went for dinner and returned to the main hall for a movie screening at 9.30pm. The movie “Goal – The dream begins” was screened and the general response was that it was a heart rending movie that ought to be watched by one and all. The participants went to bed at around 11.45pm that night, tired already, but eager to find out what was in store for the next day. !

But, for the organizers, the day was not yet over. We cleaned up the hall used today and made preliminary settings to the halls and rooms that were to be used the next day. We also had an organizers meet at around 1.15am to iron out any flaws in the day’s program and to get ourselves motivated to continue working in the same way for the remainder of the program.

The next day kicked off with a Yoga session at 7 am. The participants were taught simple exercises that they could perform every day to keep themselves free from all kinds of stress and other problems.

That was followed by breakfast and the DG Session that was handled by Rtn. DG Olivannan. The audience loved his interactive session and were all ears for what he had to say. We are indeed thankful to him for taking time off from his busy schedule to handle this session for us.

This was followed by separate classroom sessions between 11.30am and 1pm that were handled by 4 eminent speakers.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all these speakers for accepting our humble invitation and making it there and giving us wonderful sessions.

The next session was handled by Mr. Sai, a past Rotaractor. His session was lively and loved by the participants. The session soon gave way to the Culturals. We had 3 competitions - Junk Art, Adaptune and Adzap. The Rylarians participated with great interest. The Culturals got over by 8.30pm and we went for a sumptuous dinner. And what followed was probably the most awaited event of the program thus far – Yes, The DJ Night. We danced and danced to the tunes of our terrific DJ Zen and had a whale of a time.

The next day started off with breakfast at 8.30am followed by a session by Major Unni Nair – Lead the Change. He was absolutely amazing and created a spark inside each one of us. He incidentally is the brain behind the introduction of Paintball in

India

. We also had a feedback session handled by Rtr. PDRR Prasanna. The Rylarians shared their experiences over the last 2 days and also felt quite nostalgic about it.

Almost all Rylarians exchanged contact info and other details over a special lunch and finally got together in the main hall one last time for the Valedictory. The Chief Guest was Rtn. PDG Benjamin Cherian and the Guest of Honor was Rtn. Shankara Subramanian. Rtn. George .B. Cherian, Rtn. Mohsin Bijapuri, Rtn. Ravi, Rtn. Ganeshan were also present.

The DRR and the host club presidents were collared by their respective Sergeant-At-Arms. Rtr. Binu, RYLA Organizing Chairman introduced each and every organizer and applauded their efforts in making Aurum ’10 a great success. The Chief Guest and Guest of Honor were also happy about the success of the RYLA and congratulated both the organizers and the participants. There were a few launches of new projects and the Aurum ’10 Awards were also announced.

Highlights of RYLA – Aurum ’10:

v The Rotaract Club of Loyola College became the first club in the District to complete a Hat-trick of RYLAs as Organizer.

v This was only the second time that a RYLA was organized according to R.I. Standards – 3 days and 2 nights.

v The Rotaract Club of Loyola Community created the record of being the first club in the District to co-host a RYLA in their Charter Year.

Operation Treasure Hunt – OTH ’10, probably the biggest Club service event on Rotaract Club of Loyola College’s calendar was organized on 12^th September 2010 on the Loyola College Campus. About 50 Rotaractors from out club turned up enthusiastically at as early as 8am on a Sunday morning and were all geared up for the event.

The Rotaractors were split into teams of three members each. Care was taken to see to it that those who know each other are not put together as one team. This was done mainly with the aim of making the Rotaractors gain new friends. The event was flagged out by Rtn. Nandita Krishnan, President Elect, Rotary Club of Madras, at about 9.45am after Rtr. Mohd. Karan, the Project Chairman, had laid out the rules and regulations to be followed.

The Rotaractors ran in all directions, trying to solve clue after clue that was delicately placed at strategic locales. The hunt went on for about 2 hours. The first team to finish was the team consisting of Rtr. Vivek, Rtr. Selvaraj and Rtr. Irfan. The team consisting of Rtr. Promit, Rtr. Ajit and Rtr. Karan came in second. Rtr. George, Rtr. Deva and Rtr. Periyasamy finished third.

The Rotaractors were of the general opinion that the hunt was quite easy if one used his common sense. They also confessed that they had great pleasure taking part in the fun event and that they were looking forward to more such events in future.

The Valedictory took place at 12.45pm. Rtn. Mahendra Ahluwalia graced the cheerful occasion and distributed the prizes to the winners. Refreshments were also served to the participants.

To all you Rotaractors who are eagerly awaiting news about this year’s RYLA, this post is just the right fodder. Yes, it’s confirmed. This year’s RYLA – Aurum ’10 being hosted jointly by the Rotaract Club of Loyola College ( Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Madras ) and the Rotaract Club of Loyola Community ( Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chennai Sun City ) has been scheduled for September 24th, 25th, 26th at Crenieo Resorts, Muttukadu. The event is for 3 days and two nights and will be bigger and better than any other RYLA the district has seen before.

Operation Treasure Hunt

On the 12^th of September 2010, The Rotaract Club of Loyola College organized its first major club service project of the year, the Operation Treasure Hunt ’10 – a fun filled event in our college campus. About 50 Rotaractors participated in teams of three members each and had a splendid time. The hunt was a nice opportunity for them to make new friends and socialize on a big scale.

The event was flagged off by Rtn. Nandita Krishnan, President Elect, Rotary Club of Madras at 9.30 am. The event concluded by around 12 pm and the prizes were distributed by Rtn. Mahendra Ahluwalia at the valedictory ceremony at 12.30pm. At this juncture, we’d like to whole heartedly thank all the Rotarians and Rotaractors for their help and support in making this project a grand success.

Loyola World Alumni Congress

On the 28^th of August 2010, Loyola College organized its first ever Alumni Meet christened “Rejoice – The Homecoming” – Loyola World Alumni Congress. It was a extravagant event attended by many celebrities from various walks of life like Politics, Fine Arts, Media, Journalism, Business, etc,. The Rotaract Club of Loyola College helped the organisers in the smooth progress of the event by volunteering to be a part of the Packaging and Reception Committees.

AWESOME - 2010

On the 29^th of August 2010, we had the District Assembly “AWESOME”. Rtr. Ramkumar Raju (in no way related to the famed Ramalinga Raju of Satyam) was the Assembly Chairman and Rtr. Balaji Rajaram was the Assembly Secretary. The venue for the event was the Image Auditorium in R.A.Puram.

Reaching the place itself was a big ordeal on the day with the Chennai Marathon taking place on the same morning. But, you can’t demoralize Rotaractors easily and so there were participants coming in in large numbers early in the morning itself. And, we were among the first to reach the venue. The group consisted of 14 Board Members and 6 Green Rotaractors, all of whom were eager to know what was in store for them that day.

The Inauguration started at 9.30am. Rtn. DG Olivannan was the Chief Guest and Rtn. PDG J.B. Kamdar was the Guest of Honor. The Directory of the District was released on this occasion. Also, it was announced that the Rotaract Clubs of Loyola College and Loyola Community would be hosting RYLA 2010. Rtr. Gokul Raj from our club was installed as the Secretary, RYLA 2010.

The banner for RYLA comprising of the logo and name was also released. This RYLA is to be called “Aurum ’10 – discover the gold in you”. It was a double delight on that day for us, as our President, Rtr. Yasin Bijapuri was elected as the Conference Secretary. Incidentally, this is the first time that the Secretary for the Conference has been selected from a college-based Rotaract Club.

The Inauguration was followed by the Key Note session handled by T.K. Vadivel Pillai, a renown magician who enthralled the audiences with his split second changes and also made them understand the message he intended to get across. His session was adored by one and all. This was followed by class room sessions for each of the Board Members as per their designation while there was a separate session for the green Rotaractors. This session was extremely useful for each and every one of us because it gave us an insight into what we ought to do other the next year or so.

This was followed by a sumptuous lunch and an entertainment session where there were performers from John Britto and Co too. The Rotaractors enjoyed the event totally. It was added pride to our club that the following members were a part of AWESOME ’10 in more ways than one -

ü Rtr. Sachin, our International Service Director, was the Master of Ceremony for the Inauguration

ü Rtrs. Inbaraj, our Vice President and Beni, Director for Pulse Polio and Blood Donation were part of the venue management committee.

ü Rtr. Deepak was in charge of coordinating the Club Service Session.

Overall, AWESOME ’10 turned out to be an awesome event indeed!

Madras Day Celebrations

On the 22^nd of August, on the special occasion of Madras Day – the 371^st Birth Anniversary of our vibrant city, about 20 Rotaractors from the Rotaract Clubs of Loyola College and Loyola Community got together and watched a show of the new flick “Madrasapattinam”. The movie was brilliant and showed us a foray of how our city was in the days gone by. We enjoyed the show and were also happy on the count that we all could spend some quality time together as one big family called ROTARACT !

On 15^th August, on the occasion of Independence Day, the Rotaract Club of Loyola College along with the Department of Outreach and 2^nd yr BA Tamil Literature students organized a programme at Corporation Middle School, Appasamy Street , Chetpet. The flag was hoisted by the Chief Guest, Dr. J.M.V. Kalaiarasi, Professor, Dept. of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Loyola College. We had a few cultural programmes and competitions for the kids after which we provided them with refreshments.

The Rotaract Club of Loyola College had their Installation ceremony on Tuesday, the 20^th of July 2010 at 3pm at the Lawrence Sundaram Hall, Loyola College. The Chief Guest for the day was Rtn. Dg Olivannan and the Guest of Honor was Rtn. Pres. Gunasekhar. It was a well attended programme with a good response from both the Rotary and Rotaract Sides. About 200 Green Rotaractors from RCLC also attended the event. The event started at 3.15pm with the Rotaract Song. Rtr.Praveen delivered the Welcome Address.

This was followed by the Secretary’s report for the preceding year. Rtr. Britto presented the Secretary’s Report in the form of a brief Video that was liked by all. Rtr. Praveen then introduced the incoming President, Rtr. Yasin Bijapuri M.A.M. Rtr. Yasin was then collared by Rtr.Praveen as the 26^th President of the Rotaract Club of Loyola College. Rtr. Yasin was pinned by Rtn. DG Olivannan, the Chief Guest for the day. Nextly, Rtr. Britto introduced the incoming Secretary Rtr. Pradeep and passed on the Club Charter to him.

Rtn. DG Olivannan then addressed the gathering, stressing on the importance of youth of today being part of the Rotary movement. His speech was short, yet, inspiring and thought – provoking. Other speakers for the day included Rtn. Pres. Gunasekhar, Rtr. Solomon, Rtr. Suresh Prof. I.A.J. Jeyadoss ( Dean of Students, Loyola College ) our faculty advisor, Dr.R.Ravindhran and Rashan Sultan, Students Union President. We then had the Introduction of the Board Members followed by their Induction. They were inducted by their predecessors. The event got over at about 5.15pm.

We had our installation on the 20^th of July 2010. It was a well attended programme with an overwhelming response from both the Rotary and the Rotaract sides. The Chief Guest for the day was Rtn. DG Olivannan and the Guest of Honor was Rtn. Pres. Gunasekhar. Also in attendance were Rtns Prasanna Shenoy , George Cherian among others. Rtr. DRR Suresh , Rtr. DRS Swathi , Rtr. Solomon , Rtr. Theja, and others District Rotaract Officials were also present. The event began at about 3.15 pm and cane to a close at about 5.15 pm. We would like to thank every single person who was helped us in successfully holding this event. Thank You !!

Face to Face - Rtr. Yasin Bijapuri M.A.M.

We caught up with our President Rtr. Yasin for a brief interview. Here are the excerpts from that candid interview : -

1. For how many years now have you been associated with the Rotary movement?

A. I’m stepping into my 3^rd year in Rotaract. I started of as a plain Green Rotaractor who working for his Credits (Loyola College insists that every fresher does 120 hrs of Community Service).

2. Who were the main Reason/ source of Inspiration behind you joining this Rotary Movement?

A. To be really honest, I come from a Rotary family. My father is a Past President of a Rotary Club (the Rotary club of Madras North). But still, there were people like Rtr. Inder Kumar (President of RCLC for the Rotary Year 2008-09), Rtr. Aditya Mohan and the current president Rtr. Praveen who inspired me to achieve much more than just the hours required for finishing the credits.

3. When you initially joined this movement, did you imagine that you would rise to the position you are in now?

A. I actually never expected to come to the position where I am in now. I was just like any other Rotaractor, coming to the club on the 1^st day of college, where I saw this huge 20 x 10 banner put up with a phrase proclaiming that this club is the World’s Largest Rotaract Club. Even imagining me becoming something close to my current position in the club was impossible at that time.

4. You have now been elevated to the post of President of the club. How does it feel? Do you agree with the Spiderman maxim “With great power comes greater responsibility”?

A. Being the president of such an illustrious club now definitely makes me feel like I’m on cloud nine. Moreover, after seeing the work and the appreciation received by my past presidents, I feel motivated to reproduce the same. Yes, I strongly believe in that maxim and my biggest challenge will be to keep up with the standards set by my seniors and take it up a few notches further,.

5. Over the last two years, which project has been a special one according to you?

A. The project that is close to my heart is definitely ‘Meliora’ – the reason been that the result of the project was positive and helped many young school children to understand the Merits in joining and being part of the Rotary Movement. It was indeed heartening to see many students take a pledge to join Rotaract in their College years and even Rotary after that. I’m happy the project was a roaring success and I would target at conducting it in a bigger and better way this year.

6. Do you have any pet project / special project for the year?

A. There is nothing like a PET project for this year as such, because RCLC itself is something close to my heart, and what me and my team will need to concentrate on will be to organize every single project in the best way possible and see to that the standards are maintained or even elevated. To put it short, every project will get the SPECIAL treatment.

7. You were the Associate Editor of the club last year. How was that experience? Also, you were part of the organizing committee for WOW – DRC 2009-10. Was it an enriching exposure?

A. Being a part of the Editorial Team in the Club last year was amazing. Especially during the time of framing up Club Reports with people like Rtr. Jude, I felt like I was going through an amazing learning experience, though we couldn’t revive our Bulletin as planned. All that work and my performance as the Director for Professional Service helped me in bagging a role as part of the Organizing Committee for WOW ’10 (Annual District Rotaract Conference). That again, was a really unforgettable event.

8. What would be your parting words to our Green Rotaractors?

A. Firstly, I would like to extend my warm greetings to them from the RCLC family. We people are definitely special because we belong to the one of the finest institution in the country, and further we should feel proud to be a part of the Rotaract Club of Loyola College. All that I would like tell you is to make the best of the opportunity provided to you. Rotaract is one organization which offers almost everything including Individual Development, Fun and Frolic apart from the chance of serving the community around us. Emphasis and importance is given to each and every person and that depends on how you much interest you take. Target for something more than just getting credits and you would achieve it in the gamble and continue to be in the movement. Thank you :)

Say No to Drug Abuse

On 26^th June 2010 , which was celebrated as “ International Day against Drug Abuse”, the Rotaractors from our club initiated a SMS Campaign by sending a message to everyone they knew, asking them to take an oath stating that they would not dabble with DRUGS ever in their lives. We are indeed happy to have done our bit in creating awareness in society and look forward to continuing the good work in future too.

This move was widely appreciated by one and all as it will greatly help in maintaining the lush green campus of Loyola College in a clean manner.

Pets and Sets 2010

For the past two weeks, the only thing occupying a place of grave importance in the minds of our club members has been the successful completion of PETS and SETS 2010. And that thought finally bore fruit yesterday.

The last two weeks have been quite strenuous for some of us. We’ve been literally running around making preparations on a grand scale, calling up the many clubs in our district and personally inviting their President-elect and Secretary-elect to attend the seminar so that they can benefit from it. We also went over every single arrangement to recheck that we did not make even the minutest of mistakes.

The D-Day finally arrived and we were all pumped up and excited. The registration began at 8.30 am. And Rotaractors were coming in to attend the seminar eagerly in spite of it being a Sunday. More than 50 Rotaractors attended the seminar.

The inauguration ceremony was started by about 9.45 am. when the DRR Rtr. Solomon Victor was collared by the District Sergeant-At-Arms Rtr. Balaji Rajaram. This was followed by the Rotaract Song. The chief guest for the day was Rtn. Chidambara Kumar, outgoing Chairman for Rotaract. The Guest of Honor was Rtn. Ganeshan, the new Chairman for Rotaract. Rtn. Sridhar, Co-Chairman for Rotaract and Rtn. Prasanna Shenoy, Associate Chairman for Rotaract were also present.

The chief guest addressed the gathering about the projects that Rotaract had successfully completed in the past year under his guidance. He praised the outgoing board for their wonderful efforts and also wished the new board the best in all their endeavors. Rtn. Ganeshan then briefly explained the idea behind hosting a PETS and SETS. This was followed by the felicitations given by Rtn. Prasanna Shenoy and Rtn. Sridhar. The inauguration ceremony came to a close by about 11 am.

The inauguration was followed by an Ice-breaker session hosted by Rtr. Sasi Kumar. It helped the participants to mingle freely and get to know each other. We are sure that the Rotaractors surely enjoyed Rtr. Sasi’s session. They then geared up to focus their attention on what they had assembled here for – the training seminar.

The first to speak was Rtn. Ganeshan. He gave an inspiring speech where he outlined the projects he had planned for the coming year. He also gave the audience valuable pointers that will definitely help the President and Secretary elects in the effective running of their clubs.

Next in line was a very intellectual presentation by Rtn. Rajkumar. He oriented the gathering as to what exactly “WORK” meant and how to approach that concept. He also played a couple of videos of physically challenged persons who strove hard to come up in life. It left most of us with moist eyes and heavy hearts. He further motivated us to dream higher and “Take Flight” to achieve our dreams. The session lasted for about 100 minutes and was very informative.

The Rotaractors then briefly adjourned for lunch till 2.30pm. We all had a sumptuous meal courtesy Rtn. Ganeshan. The lunch break was proved to be a good opportunity for the participants to interact well and develop a good bonding.

We had a quick photo session followed by a talk by Rtn. Praveen Mehra – a session where the audience was all eyes and ears for what he had to say. He also listed out the guidelines, etc. for the board members and helped clear a lot of apprehensions in the minds of our young leaders of tomorrow.

The last session of the day was by Rtn. Kannan. He held a few management games for us which enthralled the participants and also, most importantly, taught us the need to have a good rapport among the team and to work as a team at all times. In short, he clearly reminded us that “Unity is strength”.

The valedictory ceremony was hosted by our DRR Rtr. Solomon Victor. He announced the winners for the Best President-elect and Secretary-elect of the seminar. Rtr. Roselyn from the Rotaract club of Soka Ikeda was selected as the Best President-Elect and Rtr. Yusuf from the Rotaract Club of Vishwahita was selected as the Best Secretary-Elect.

Rtr. Ashwin, our ZRR, then introduced to the gathering every single person who had worked behind the scenes and put in their invaluable efforts that helped make this event a grand success.

A special word of mention for a few people who’ve worked day in and out for his project - Rtr. Vishwanath ( the Chairman of Pets and Sets) Rtr. Pradeep( Secretary of Pets and Sets) , Rtr.Solomon Victor ( DRR RI 3230 ) , Rtr. Yasin Bijapuri ( President elect , RCLC ) and Rtr. Praveen ( President , RCLC ).

The event finally ended with all of us bidding adieu to each other on a sad note as the day had come to an end so fast. But, we were all happy at the thought of having made so many friends on this single day.

The Rotary Club of Madras sponsored its first Interact club at Vidya Mandir. The club was inaugurated on September 23, 1965. Soon after, the second Interact club was established at Doveton Corrie. In 1994-95, during the presidentship of V. Ramabhadran, Rtns. Prathap Kumar, Arun Sarathi and Dr. K. Rajan embarked on an enrolment drive and took the number of Interact clubs from 15 to 23. This set a world record though, shortly afterwards, the Club was overtaken by a club in Colombo. Today, the Rotary Club of Madras sponsors 25 Interact clubs.

Not too far behind came the Rotaract movement in 1968, which allowed the Rotary to expand their service to young adults in the age group of 17-30. The purpose of the Rotaract is to stimulate among its members an acceptance of high ethical standards in all occupations, to develop leadership and responsible citizenship through service to the community and to promote international understanding and peace.

At a club meeting on October 29, 1968, Rtn. A. Agarwal announced the Club’s intention of sponsoring a Rotaract club to be known as the Rotaract Club of Madras. He requested Rotarians to sponsor the club by enrolling their children and their friends. Twenty members were necessary for the club to get started. Today, the Rotaract Club of Madras has closed down but in its time it had the distinction of being the first community-based Rotaract Club ever. The Club also co-sponsored the Rotaract Club of Ethiraj with the Rotary Club of Chennapatna. This joint venture was a first in the district. In the late 1990s, however, the Club relinquished the Rotaract club to the sole ownership of the Rotary Club of Chennapatna. Today, the Rotary Club of Madras sponsors six flourishing Rotaract clubs; five are in colleges — Presidency College, Queen Mary’s College, Loyola College, New College and Madras Medical College — and the Vepery Rotaract Club is community based.

Both the Interact and Rotaract movements came into being when the world was witnessing war on several fronts. In Africa, old colonial powers were being overthrown. In 1967, Israel won a six-day war against the rest of the Arab countries. USA and the erstwhile USSR entered the period of the Cold War after teetering on the brink of nuclear war. And as the first club came into being in Madras, Indian troops were pushing back invaders on the frontier.

In this climate, the Rotary felt the urgency of training youngsters to be responsible leaders, with a broad understanding and tolerance of other cultures. As Rtn. Lt. Col. Vasudeva Rao said in 1965, “... I believe that clubs like the Interact have a major part to play in answering the need of our country. Misunderstanding leads to war and if only countries understood each other’s aims better, I am sure that wars can be checked. Prevention is better than cure and it is here that the young come into play.”

When it started, the Interact movement was meant only for boys. In 1969, the Board of Directors of Rotary International voted to admit girls to the Interact. The Board said: “The Interact was originally established as a programme for boys only and retains a primary emphasis on training in leadership and citizenship for boys. Nevertheless, should local circumstances indicate to the sponsoring Rotary club that good cause would be served by admission of girls, the sponsoring Rotary Club is at liberty to use its discretion accordingly.”

For many years, the Club considered Youth Service a part of Community Service. It was only in 1978, that Youth Service was declared a separate avenue. Under able directors such as Rtns. N.K. Gopinath, Arun Sarathi, M. Pratap Kumar, Dr. K. Rajan, Archana Shri Sanjay and Indhra Subramanyam, Youth Service has developed into a vibrant channel of service.

Interactors and Rotaractors look for opportunities to be of service to both the local and world communities. Leadership camps like RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), started in 1971 to develop and build youngsters to be leaders with strong ethics and values. Their social talents and public relations abilities are honed. Youngsters develop both confidence and a conscience. Whether it is helping in old age homes, orphanages, organising blood donation drives and medical camps, or conducting fundraisers, these youngsters lead the way in their generation.

While the Rotaract clubs in colleges are doing well, the success of the Rotaract Club of Vepery suggests that community-based Rotaract clubs are the way to the future.

The Vepery Rotaract came into being when a group of students from Doveton Corrie High School graduated, but were reluctant to leave their Interact days behind. The Interact club of Doveton Corrie is not only the second oldest Interact club in Chennai but also one of the finest. The motivation to form a community based Rotaract club came from the school Interact counsellor and Maths teacher, Mr. Natarajan. Rtr. Jaby John, one of the founding members of the Vepery Rotaract club recalls the early days of the club. "Boys that had passed out from Doveton Corrie five years ago, and quite a few from my batch had been avid Interactors. We formed the nucleus of the new club. We modelled it on a Rotary club."

The first two to three years were spent consolidating the club. The club would meet twice a month at Hotel Breeze on Poonamallee High Road. Since fun had been an integral part of the Interact, the group decided to carry on the same spirit of fun as a Rotaract Club. Fellowship was emphasised and every month a different person took the responsibility of organising a fellowship dinner. As John says, "Given the age group of our club, we need a lot of fun activities to keep people motivated and interested in being a part of the club." Once members had bonded through fellowship, the club launched itself into community service. "We used to move from project to project. On public holidays we would visit orphanages and old age homes. But now we’re setting up some projects that are ongoing in nature like a medical centre at Kolathur."

To raise funds, the club held Planet Rotaract, a fun fair on the lawns of Abu Palace, a hotel on Poonamallee High Road. Planet Rotaract has now become a yearly affair and is a crowd-puller.

Forging a bond with the Rotary Club of Madras, the club can be depended upon to help the Rotary’s ongoing projects. In 1996, they made contributions to Rotary Nagar. A function was organised at the Community Hall of Rotary Nagar and the following donations were handed over to the residents:

A Singer Fashionmaker sewing machine to the students of the Rotary Nagar tailoring class;
Rs. 2,100 towards the cost of medicine administered by the Primary Health Centre;
Schoolbags, pencil boxes, water bottles and stationery to the Class V children attending the Rotary Nagar night school;
Rs. 1,000 to assist a handicapped resident in setting up a public call office at Rotary Nagar.

The club won the Best Rotaract Club Award 2000-2001. That year, the club completed a record 35 projects in 350 days. Just days after Gujarat was devastated by an earthquake, a three member team from the Vepery Rotaract Club rushed to the State to assist aid and rescue operations. They also sent aid in the form of cash (Rs. 2,00,000), 1,000 new blankets, old clothes, milk and other essentials. A team of three doctors also went.

The Vepery Rotaract Club is both the legacy of the Interact movement and the pioneer of the Rotaract movement. Most of all, it is proof of what young people can achieve when their hearts, minds, and souls are opened.

On the 8^th of June 2010, about 25 Rtrs. from our club set out from our club office in a procession of cars at about 3 pm to start what was going to be our first club service project of the year. And our destination – the paintball centre near Thiruvanmiyur. We reached there by around 4.30 and from then on completely had a blast of a time for nearly three hours. We stopped for Refreshments on the way and then returned to the club office by around 8 pm, with bodies really tired to the core but with hearts really warm thanks to the Amazing experience.

On the 19^th of May , inspite of Cyclone Laila lashing the city , four Rtrs. From our club including the outgoing president Rtr.Praveen visited Rtr.Lakshmi Theja at her house and celebrated her B’Day. We made her cut a cake specially ordered for her and then we distributed it to her family members as well. We are sure that Rtr’Theja was totally caught unaware of this sudden celebration and we are happy that we could go on with inspite of the “Natural” hurdles .. ..

Lending a Helping Hand

On 16^th May , four Rotaractors from our club including our President-elect Rtr.Yasin Bijepuri and Secretary-elect Rtr.Pradeep Ravi visited Good Life Centre in Tambaram ( a Home for Orphans and Mentally Challenged persons ) and distributed about 150 sets of clothes to the inmates there. They spent some time interacting with the children there who seemed to be very lively and active.

On the 13^th of May, a few of our Rotaractors distributed about 50 sets of clothes to the non-teaching staff of our college. This was the first event of the year for our club after the new board had been elected. The non-teaching staff were really happy and whole-heartedly appreciated our efforts in doing what best we could.

Q. Who introduced you to Rotaract?

Praveen: It was my good friend Rtr.Prabhoo Narayana Moorthy Who first urged me to join the Rotaract Club in college.

Q. Which quality or aspect of Rotaract appeals to you a lot?

Praveen: Forgiveness... You can afford to do mistakes here at Rotaract and then learn from your mistakes. It is not like the Corporate World where they might hire you in the morning for your intellectual capacity and yet fire you before evening for a silly mistake you make!

Q. Who are your inspiration / role model at Rotaract? - Please mention Rotaractor(s) and Rotarian(s)....

Praveen: A good number of people have led me by example including Rtn.George.B.Cherian, Rtn.Prasanna Shenoy, Rtn.Ahluwalia, Rtn.Subbu and Rtr.Inder Kumar, Rtr.Solomon Victor, Rtr. Lakshmi Theja, Rtr.Sujit, Rtr.Manoj, Rtr.Hanif, Rtr.Aditya, Rtr.Sharan.

Q. In the past 3 years, have you, at any point, regretted joining Rotaract?

Praveen: No. Rotaract has been nothing but a great learning experience for me.

Q. What is the happiest moment you can recall in Rotaract?

Praveen: My journey in Rotaract all these years has thoroughly been an exceedingly satisfying one. Attending RYLA and Conducting RYLA twice deserve special mention though.

Q. You were an Interactor initially. Which do you like more - Rotaract or Interact?

Praveen: Yes, I was an Interactor at first, but it was in Rotaract that I got more exposure. That is what helps Rotaract score over Interact.

Q. Of all the programmes you conducted / took part in, which is your personal favorite and why?

Praveen: Undoubtedly it is RYLA, because it was the project that made me to stay in Rotaract.

Q. On a concluding note, would u like to say something to our green rotaractors??

Praveen: Invest your valuable time correctly and sense some improvement in Rotaract Movement rather than just working towards finishing off your required hours for the sake of credits. The Rotaract Club of Loyola College (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Madras) was installed on the 25^th of June 2009, the year being of immense significance, as it marked the 25^th year of the inception of the club.

“Operation Treasure Hunt” was conducted in September for the Green Rotaractors. The Club, in collaboration with SNEHA – an anti-suicide organization, conducted a stress-management workshop in September in order to discover ways of curbing the escalating suicide rate within the society.

The Rotaract Youth Leadership Awards 2009 (RYLA) was conducted in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Madras Central on the 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th of October at Dakshin Chitra which was a roaring success. MELIORA ’10 was initiated by the club in January, targeting the spheres of youth leadership to evoke an overwhelming pledge of continuity in the Rotary movement.

A paintball shootout was organized on Feb. 16^th where Rotaractors were allowed to break free and de-stress at the Paintball battleground in Thiruvanmiyur. The club exhibits its dedication to Rotary and the society by continuing its commitment towards traditional projects such as Pulse Polio, Vandalur Zoo Project and Blood Donation for the 15^th year in succession. Rotaract is an international organization of young professionals and students ages 18 to 30 that are committed to service and leadership in their communities and abroad. What does Rotaract do?

Through our activities, we focus on service (both locally and globally), professional development, leadership development, and fellowship. We do this through bi-monthly meetings, regular service projects, and social events.

How is Rotaract connected to Rotary?

Rotaract can be described as the "younger" version of Rotary. Rotaract clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs and are true partners in service. Rotaract Clubs sponsored by the local Rotary clubs: Rotaractors have an open invitation to attend the weekly meetings of sponsoring Rotary clubs, and their members drop by Rotaract meetings as well. Rotaractors also participate in projects of sponsoring Rotary clubs as well as the projects of other Rotary clubs. Rotarians are the business and civic leaders of our community, and interacting with them through service provides Rotaract members with unique opportunities to learn and be mentored.

Most of our members are young professionals in their mid twenties and span from non-profit careers to the corporate world, from education to government.
